If there’s one thing I’ve noticed about working from home, its how much money I don’t spend going to work.
It may seem obvious to some, but what I want you to do for a minute is sit down and work out how much you spend over these 260 days each year.
I’ll take you through mine – so if yours is more or less…
Food/Drink: I like so many, was too lazy to make sandwiches each morning, so as a result got something at work. I was probably under the average by spending about £2 a day, but also spent an extra £1 on either coffee or soft drinks, depending on the season.(£780 year)
Clothes: I got away quite lightly here, not having to wear a suit, but trousers/shirts and ties and well as dry cleaning was easily another £400 a year. Not much, but I’m willing to bet yours is higher.
Now the Biggies
Transport: Those who let the train take the strain will be doing the deep sigh here. Train fares are truly extortionate, and you have my sympathy.
Luckily, I was able to drive to work, living only 12 miles away from my last workplace. Knowing that, we can work out the petrol costs, and that’s when we all get to shed a tear, with my old car getting 32mpg at best and petrol at £6.00 a gallon – that’s (desktop calculator time) just under £1200
Add onto that £400 a year for insurance, £180 for Road Tax, at least £200 for MOT/Servicing. So, even for my modest car that was total of £2000, not including what I paid for it in the first place.
So, just covering those things that’s not far off £3200. And remember, you’ve already paid tax on that so you will have to have earned over £4000 to end up with that £3200.
So by my estimations, if you earned £20k a year at work, you would only need to earn less than £16k at home to have exactly the same lifestyle.
But don’t weep just yet. There’s one last thing.
Why? There is of course, the question of tax. I’m not making any promises, I’m certainly not an accountant, but just do this one thing.
Get your P60 for last year; see how much tax you paid. Find a self employed friend or relative who earns about what you do, and ask how much tax they paid last year.
I’ll say no more…..
So, if you are considering starting your home business, sit down and work out how much you actually need, it may be less than you think.
In the meantime, if you want to dip your toe in the murky world of online businesses, please take this opportunity to use my eBay pocket money generator.
It’s basically the same process I use to earn £100-£250 a week, using only part time hours.
It is completely free to use, there’s not even any sign-up. All I ask is that if you think it’s a good idea, just let you friends know about it so they can use it too without obligation.

We’ve all read them, some of love them – some of us hate them. But, we must admire them regardless, as they held our rapt attention for at least 15 minutes, and sometime even longer – what am I talking about?
The Long Copy sales letter.
You know the ones – where you will learn the secret of the multi-million dollar business, but only after hearing about how they beat adversity and have shown you some nice pictures of their house and speedboat.
They were the size of a small novel, but you carried on reading – in fact, you read and scrolled down and down and down and down….
By mail it was the same, the sales letters coming through your door were so thick you could hear them drop on your doormat from anywhere in the house, and could easily concuss any dog foolish enough to try and catch it as it fell.
So why did they do it? Why did marketers pay thousands to copywriters, printers and the post/mail office to get these things under our noses?
Because they worked. We sighed, tutted and cursed at their arrival, but we read them just the same….
But not anymore. Sales letters seem to be getting shorter – there’s no more wearing out the wheel on your mouse trying to scroll straight to the bottom of the page to see how much it’s going to cost – because nearly all new sales pages are just a headline and a screen, with a big play button in the middle.
Video is the big thing in internet marketing – and you will do well to find a successful recent sales page without one – and now the pages of long copy are left behind us, where does that leave the copywriter?
Now, most of you will agree, not all internet marketers are amazingly photogenic, even less are blessed with incredible acting or presenting skills – but what they are saying must be doing the trick as folks are still buying in droves.
This is where those with copywriting skills are now earning their money. Video is believed to be more effective than the written word, so everything in those videos has to be perfect.
One of the greatest exponents of the ‘video’ type sales page is UK marketer Kevin Potts, an ex-church minister (no, really) who started online on Sept 2008 and now regularly earns over $5k per day and has gone on to found the Cambridge Business Academy.
Kevin has deliberately done away with long sales letters and instead uses video presentations to amazing effect.
Go here to see an example of Kevin at his eccentric best
As you can see, Kevin really injects his personality into the presentation, and that combined with competitively priced, quality products such as ‘penny a click Google advertising‘ and the ‘24hr wealth creation formula’ is really the secret to his success.
Here’s another example of Kevin doing his thing
So, does the work of Kevin and alike mean the end of the long copy sales letter?
Well, my mouse finger and my mail/postman certainly hope so….

By now you’ve probably seen videos or read a sales letter from someone who’s made a lot of money online explaining the success of their business and you will have, of course, been astounded and impressed by the amount of money they are making, and they lifestyle they lead.
Seeing their success, you would have no doubt thought ‘I wouldn’t mind making that sort of money’ and you entertained thoughts of a bigger house, that car you’ve always wanted or pictured yourself on the beach walking along without a care in the world -but I bet the VERY NEXT thought was ‘But I can’t see myself doing it’ and the whole lot came crashing down.
You see, in that one second you have just encountered the biggest hurdle you will face when it comes to having your own business, whether it be on online or any other type at all, and it is this:
